I need a recommendation for a beginner gardening book.?
I live on 1/2 an acre so I have plenty of room. My parents always had a garden but that was 20+ years ago and I didn’t know much back then.
I’m wanting to grow tomatoes, chives, herbs, squash, spinach, asparagus, peas, green beans, onions, garlic, strawberries, bell peppers, potatoes, carrots, corn, and soybeans.
Thanks for your help.
You’ll need at least three gardening books. Everything you mentioned is considered a ‘farm vegetable’ so you’ll need a good book on general vegetable gardening … did you know if you plant your radishes under roses, both the radishes and the roses will grow better and healthier? Did you know you can use both the petals and the ‘hips’ of roses in cooking? I found this out from my first general vegetable gardening book. You’ll also want a ‘zone specific’ gardening book (are you sure that where you live can support growth of all you’ve mentioned?), and a book on garden planning and decorating. Get the books as soon as possible, because you’ll want to have your garden ‘planned’ and know what you’ll want to start in pots indoors early. Spring is for digging and getting dirty. Winter is for dreaming about spring and summer. Autumn is for harvesting (but you’ll want to harvest the asparagus in the late spring and early summer, and perhaps plant a second crop). Go to Amazon.com and do a search to find the available books, buy the best you can (most books have ‘excerpts’ you can read on this website) then get the books. I won’t recommend any specific books to you, because that is the first part of the fun of becoming a gardener. And don’t forget to plant some flowers, too … they’ll help your vegetables and your vegetables will help them. I had approximately a quarter acre and ‘interplanted’ the vegetables with the flowers, and put the ‘kid friendly’ plants along the paths. My kids would get hungry when they were out playing and just be able to reach up from their ‘tipi’ and eat a few raw beans (green, yellow), or take a walk over the bridge to eat some strawberries, some blueberries, or pull up a few carrots! Yes, my kids ate their veg and still do … because they watched them grow. Good luck, have fun, and realize the garden isn’t going to be perfect … and planning next year’s garden is going to be even more fun!
