Read This If You Plan To Grow Organic Vegetables
How to Start on the Right Path
You’ve probably heard the expression “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail” This really applies when you want to grow organic vegetables. The most important thing you have to do is plan. The last thing you want to do is devote all this hard work only to end up back at the local supermarket for those pesticide fed fruits and vegetables. So let’s look at a plan for how to grow organci vegetables.
Your Organic Vegetable Garden Checklist
The most crucial item when you plan to grow organic vegetables is where is your water supply. A source of water has to be close for your organic garden. Is it possible to install an irrigation system with a timer from this water source? Be careful not to overwater or underwater your garden. Either case will cause damage to the plants. You need to perform consistent and proper watering throughout the growing season.
Determine how your plot is facing. It is best to have it facing south if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere then the opposite is true. This helps you get the necessary morning and afternoon sun. You should have about 7-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Clear any trees that may be blocking the sunlight for your garden.
Research what type of mulch you want to use. Being an organic garden, you’ll want to use organic mulch. Using compost is great for mulch because of its plant feeding qualities.
What are the vegetables you want to grow and how much work are you willing to do? Select vegetables or fruits that are conducive for the area you live. Even if you want a particular fruit or vegetable, it may not do well where you dwell. You should seek help from local merchants or agencies with your vegetable choices. When planting, do not put the crops too close to each other. Follow the guidelines provided by the supplier and add to the distance just to assure there is no overcrowding.
When starting out don’t overplant. Begin small and only plant what you will use.
Make sure you use quality plants and not “cheap” transplants that are going to die after planting.
Dealing With Pests and Critters
Controlling the pests is an important part of planning to grow organic vegetables. You could even plant certain disease and insect resistant plants in your garden. This would reduce risking having your organic vegetable garden ruined by pests. Options such as using human hair for spreading around plants or planting harmful insect plants have been chosen to combat such problems.
Making Your Own Compost
Making your own compost can be an option when you plan to grow organic vegetables. You can accumulate compost by adding organic items but be careful because you don’t want to end up with a foul smelling pile. Items such as grass clippings, biodegradable food waste, old plants, flowers and weeds are examples of compost ingredients. Avoid fecal matter from cats or dogs. Hedge clippings can be included in your compost pile but by their nature are slow to break down and should be avoided.
