Basics To Reflect On While Building a Water Feature or Garden Fishpond

I’m aspect of gardening that is really gaining popularity these days is water gardening.You can really enhance the beauty of your water features, including your waterfalls, Koi ponds, and fountains by adding some nice decorative rock work as well as different lighting combinations for unique looks.  You don’t have to have anything really fancy to start water gardening, as a water garden can consist of a simple plastic tub, or anything else that can hold water.

The location of your water garden is probably the most important thing you want to consider.  If you have a place in your yard that gets a lot of sunlight, this is probably one of your best places as fish as well as plants need a lot of sunlight. Keep it away from bushes and trees is a good idea.  This will also help prevent leaves and debris from collecting in the water.

Another thing that you want to think about is the size of water feature that you want.  Your budget will probably play a large part in the size of your water garden as things like fish, lights, and rocks can get expensive.  You also need to think about how big of a piece of property you have and the amount of time you wish to spend on maintenance. 

A thing to remember about aquatic plants is that you only want to let them cover about half of the water so be sure and take this into consideration when choosing which type of aquatic plants you want.  There are many different types of plants including submerged, floating, and marginal.  The decision on which type is all a matter of your personal likes and dislikes.  Different plants provide different features, has some are better at providing oxygen for the pool while others give off Pleasant aromas, and others are just very nice to look at. Fish can also benefit your water feature in a nice way other than just by looks.  Fish help keep debris at a minimum and help in controlling larva and other insects.

The build up of algae is one of the difficulties that many people face so keeping water clean of it is kind of a challenge.  Some of the things that can contribute to algae problems include too many nutrients in the water from fertilizing the plants too much or over feeding your fish. If ponds are made correctly and are maintained properly algae problems and control will be kept at a minimum.        

It doesn’t really matter what size of water feature or pond you have, you’re going to need to do some sort of maintenance to it throughout the year. With proper planning you can ensure a healthy balance between living and decorative features of a water garden that can almost care for itself with simple maintenance inputs from you. 

Effective methods for getting rid of algae include things such as completely changing the water, installing a filtration system, cutting back on the fertilizing and feeding of your fish and plants, and installing more plants into the system.  There are some chemicals that can be used, like copper compounds, but overuse can kill plant life and fish.

It really doesn’t take any more time to create a water garden than it does a regular garden, but there are obviously two different things.  Some people who are expert water gardeners couldn’t grow a plant in the ground to save the life, and it might be  the same for you. If you are looking for a way to occupy some time or to beautify your yard, water gardening is an excellent way.
